Celebrations as Peoples republic of Guardianista joins European Union

After a lengthy 2 year application process, the Peoples Republic of Guardianista (PRG) was last night accepted into the European Union. Celebrations immediately broke out in Hampstead, the capital of the emerging nation, as residents looked forward to being able to travel to France and Tuscany without restrictions on their movement. Chairperson Toynbee hailed the decision as 'historic' and hoped that the move would 'revitalise the economy and improve public services'. The nation immediately adopted the Euro as its currency.

After the truamatic divorce from DailyMailLand in 2010, the country had immediately applied for EU membership. This was in contrast to the approach of the DailyMailLand, which unilaterally withdrew from the union upon gaining its independence, and declared that Europe was something they would never surrender to. The prime minister of DailyMailLand, Paul Dacre, in a lengthy statement congratulated the PRG on securing membership but warned that his own country would resist with every breath the encroachment of Europe onto their territory. He added that he believed the Guardianistas would regret the move, particularly its decision to join the euro, as it meant they would no longer be able to exercise sovereignty over its own economic policies. He added that although economic policy in DailyMailLand was still determined by the IMF, at least the IMF was enforcing the correct free market policies and couldn't care less about the shape of his banana.

In a television response to Dacre, Will Hutton -The Chancellor of the Peoples Republic of Guardianista – pointed out that as an emerging nation the PRG had little sovereignty over its own economic policies. Furthermore he added that it wouldn't make a difference as very few Guardianistas understood economics anyway.

Concept of the blog

In 2010 following a disputed election result a series of events shook the once great country of Britain to its very core. In Parliament, years of hot air produced by the house of commons created a flammable gas that was ignited when Charles Kennedy got pissed and told his colleagues that the smoking ban was a load of bollocks and he lit a cigarette. Most members of parliament, their researchers and senior civil servants were killed in the resulting fire.

After a great deal of soul searching, the UK announced that –as it couldn’t agree on the way forward and the kind of nation it wanted to be – it was to undergo a divorce and be replaced by 2 new separate countries that would reflect the divide. On one side was DailyMailLand, a constitutional monarchy run by Prime Minister Paul Dacre, and on the other was the Peoples Republic of Guardianista, headed by Chairperson Toynbee. Both nations strived to create new societies based upon the political visions of their previous incarnations.

This blog takes up the story in 2012 and reports on how both nations fare in a complex and dangerous world as they try to rebuild a shattered economy and traumatised society.
